Doug, our Museum tour guide talks to the visitors in the Cretaceous room

That was Nick’s joke when he stuck his hand inside the Camarasaurus’s mouth. Nice try, buddy! But it is a great example of just how tactile – and accessible – the whole visit to the Morrison Museum of Natural History was for blind kids on Saturday.

And nobody lost an actual appendage. Instead, it was a fun and tactile time examining and learning about creatures from the Jurassic, Cretaceous, and Ice Ages.
Besides, who doesn’t like dinosaurs? Our February FAST (Fun Activities & Skill Training) program was a meetup at the Morrison Museum of Natural History, our tour guide Doug gave a hands-on tour of the museum’s exhibits.

High school student Seth slices apples with a large knife while mentor Heather offers guidance.

It was all about pies. That’s how we promoted our November 16 FAST (Fun Activities and Skills Training) event. We called it “Conquering the Kitchen,” and parents, youth, and teachers came from the Denver and Colorado Springs areas. Blind youth worked in the large kitchen with volunteer teachers from our Independence Training Program (ITP), while their parents were in the small kitchen with Director Julie Deden learning the same nonvisual techniques.

This summer, the Colorado Center for the Blind will again offer its No Limits to Learning program for blind teens. In addition to the 4-week program we offered in 2023, we will also offer a 7-week program that will include attending the National Federation of the Blind convention in Orlando.

We believe blind people can do anything. Every day, we encourage and challenge each student—and they come to understand their potential as they build the skills and confidence to live the life they want. Because when you believe in yourself and experience a thriving community of positive blind people, nothing can hold you back from pursuing your dreams.

And that is what our summer programs offer – a positive community of thriving blind people that teach effective nonvisual skills and foster confidence in blind teens.

Summer for Success
